Your largest FRESHWATER fish ever!?
Posted Fri Jun 27, 2008 8:16 am Your largest FRESHWATER fish ever!?
What is the largest freshwater fish you have ever taken on any size tackle? Where did you catch it? What was the size? Anything that made this fish memorable other than it being the largest fish you have ever taken from freshwater?

The largest freshwater fish I have ever caught was a king salmon from lake ontario. I do not have a picture i can upload of it, however it was a little over 28 pounds. I caught it in August of 2006 out of Olcott, NY. It is certainly amazing the power of these fish, and ever since a hooked into my first king, they have become my favorite species to catch!

89lb flathead caught last year while fishing Card Creek. Card Creek feeds into Elk City Res, where the current world record flathead came from. I have never landed a flathead over 90lbs but I have landed a lot in the 60 to 80lb range. I had one hooked last year and up to the boat that made those 80lb fish look like bait. It too was hooked in Card Creek. I had it up to the boat several times but do to mechanical failure of the reel, the 50lb braid I was using snapped like sewing thread. The 89lb fish I landed was great but a real disappointment when I weighed it and it was only 89lbs. My Son who is 13 is having similar difficulties. He has landed a lot of flatheads between 40 and 60lbs but he can not seem to make the jump into 60lb+ fish. We fish together, use the same bait, but for some reason he can not seem to drive his hook into anything over 60lbs but I do fairly regularly. I can't figure it out, just an odd situation. He can not go over 60lbs and I can not get past the 90lb barrier. I figured this was my year but the weather patterns in the central US have kept me off the water at night. The nights I plan on hunting big cats are the nights that the storms are the worst. One night soon, the skies will clear and I will be putting big cats in the boat. I have plenty of time and if it isn't this year, there is always next year. There is a 100lb+ flathead with my name on it swimming Card Creek at this very moment.

6 foot 6 inch sturgeon taken in the Harrison river. Never weighed it as too big to hook up to scale. Had a mouth I could stick my fat arm down.
Have hooked alot bigger but never got them into shore. One took a run and spooled my reel and snapped the 130 lb test like it was thread.

My big three:
Smallmouth = 22"
Walleye = 31"
Muskie= 51.5"
As far as some other species:
Crappie= 2.5#
Bluegill= 11"
LM Bass= 21.5" (smaller than my biggest smally)
Catfish= probably about 4lbs.
Pike= 40" (caught while muskie fishing)
That's about all I can remember, but I'm sure there are some other species that I can't remember their size...carp,wiper,striper and some trout.

About a year ago my buddy and I were fishing Lake Pleasant near Phoenix Az. He was catching some bluegill and small bass on pieces of nightcrawler , so I put a #6 hook on & a piece of nightcrawler .Didn't realize it , but I hooked a 10" striped bass & a 25 pound flathead tried to eat it. Rig was a Quantu Mantra baitcaster & medium weight rod. Took about 15 minutes to boat ole flattie. That little hook was just barely penetrating his lip. The little striper was still on , slipped a little further up the line.
Happy fishing.

smallmouth-5.5lbs
pike-11lbs
musky-16lbs
carp-22lbs
perch-1.5lbs
walleye-7lbs
i cant remember them all but the one fight that stickcs out for me was an eel i caught on a worm. it was around 36 inches. i was covered in slime and couldnt get an accurate measurement. what a fight, the way they swim through the water. the girth was also big, they get really fat around here. it took me atleast 20 -30 minutes to get that slippery bugger in. it probably weighed in around 4-5 lbs. exact weight and measurement was hard to get, they are very hard to handle. the slime on my hands didnt come off for quite a while, even when scrubbed it doesnt come off, its just like crazy glue. i will never forget that.

Well, the largest bass were from Florida and were both over 11 pounds, but the most memerable was the one that I caught in my home state of Delaware that was almost the state record at 10.16 pounds. That was the second biggest bass ever caught in Delaware. That was the best for me. The photo is in my gallery.

sturgeon, unweighed, at least six and a half feet long, pulled me around in a zodiac for an hour or so in a thunderstorm and had to beach the boat, fight the fish in waist deep water and jumped on it to land it. A hairy experience!
