Winter Pike
Since no one seems to like my idea of a winter bass tournament, whose up for a pike tournament I'm thinking late December or anytime in January. It'll be tough to beat you guys in Ontario but I'll give it a try. Leave a post if your in we need at least 10, lets shoot for 30+ though

Bring em on.....would love to fish a bunch this winter. Gotta love them pike. Other than lake trout, there isn't much else around in my neck of the woods.

I'd be in over my head for sure with this one, but it would be fun. Pike are pretty scarce around here.

Re: Winter Pike
I don't have Pike in my close waters BUT if you guys will allow Tmas, and I to compete on this with our Tiger Musky(they are Pike/Musky hybrid comparable to Pike length 30-40 inches at Newton Resevoir)..and tough to catch through the ice which I've never done but Tmas has. But I will try..I'd be in!!! Also ice is pretty safe the end of January usually here!
Will you guys agree to us joining in with our Tiggers at Newton?

Re: Winter Pike
Looks like we have enough for a tournament. Sounds like everyone's fine with tigers being allowed but if they're like musky they'll be pretty hard to catch ice fishing you don't often see muskies pulled thrugh the ice around here, not sure how it is elsewhere. Not sure about a March tourny season closes here Feb 28 except for on the boarder of MN/CA which is about 300 miles from where I live. There's been a lot of different suggestions for when to have the tournament so we have to narrow it down a little. Too bad you all don't get ice as early as me I should be out by the end of Dec, driving my truck out in Jan.

I think we need to keep this thread going and have it in Feb. More the merrier and bigger payout plus more slots! Look at the SM boards this week...pretty sad! Just a thought...

Re: Winter Pike
Hey! too I think we should do a at least top 3 payout...and put in $15 or more .. or something like...this only 1st payout... crap in my opinion...and tiger musky umm... they do grow longer...I say only open tigers to "utah" ...

Re: Re: Winter Pike
And NJ???? We dont really have many pike. The chances of you guys gettin a 40" pike are better than us finding a 30" pike here. Tigers dont grow as big as pures and I think are very comparible to your pike. Maybe I'm wrong, what is a nice pike in your neck of the woods? Here it is nice if you just catch 1, pretty rare. A 40" tiger is considered a trophy here.

Re: Winter Pike
My last few pike have been 36" 38" and 40" all within the last few weeks. Now this was on the Ottawa river which will produce bigger pike than some of the inland lakes I fish in the winter time. If you head up North more you can expect up to 46-48" pike.

Re: Winter Pike
MN state record tiger is 34lbs 12oz 51" and was caught in 1999 so they do get pretty big but how easy is it to catch them ice fishing because I know musky are really rare around here in the winter not sure about tigers though. Record pike here is 45lbs 12oz n/a length but was caught 70 or 80 years ago 40"+ is considered a trophy here for pike. So I guess everyone should say what the think about letting tigers in we have 2 months to figure it out

Re: Re: Winter Pike
I agree "trying to catch Tigers under the ice is TOUGH"! Our record is 49" out of Pineview Resevoir about an hour from me BUT on liquid. Newton Resevoir where I plan to fish very rare to pull a 40" out...35" are common. I caught a 41" 2 years ago BUT on liquid.
I just found this World Record through the ice. http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/fishing/news/story?id=3918264
I'll PM some of these Pike guys and get more involved. If we get these guys excited throughout Dec. I think we could get 30 involved and have a better payout. And have the tourney in Feb.
I was thinking...$7/$19
1st-$250
2nd-$125
3rd-$75
4th-$50
5th-$25
or maybe just 3 payouts.
It doesn't hurt my feelings to not have Tigers with the Pike. I'd love to see a good turn out however. And beable to participate.

I will be in on any Pike tourny, I think between now and then we could discuss good winter release practices for big fish, I drill a livewell in the ice if I anticipate big fish, that way it can revive while you get your tape measure and camera ready...when its cold you need to keep the fish in water so its eyes dont freeze.........count me in.

I agree with Wayne!!! Have to prep ourselves so we dont hurt the big jacks!!! A warm hut would help with the eyes freezing but its hard to get good shots in the hut but it can be done!!! Id be in, where ever Ill be!!!

Re: Winter Pike
never heard of the eye freezing thing..but I have a story about how tough Pike really are..a couple yrs back I caught around a 8 to 9 lber wanted to eat so I kept it ..it lied on the ice all day.. frozen stiff and home she came for dinner..where I would clean and cook ...while... the wife was suppose to drive to niece to the bus terminal...I get home my wife has a headache ...and she dumps the chore on me...so I put the pike in the bathtub 1/4 fill with cold water to unstiff ...and off to town I go(45 minutes later)...I return home to find my 5 yr old daughter poking a fully revived swimming pike with a spatula.swimming with what room it had from one side of the tub to the other...I was surprised to find this the 1st time but my theory is they are tougher then givin credit(pike that is)and the cold helped into some sort of suspended state..and the eyes seemed fine and did have its sight back for it noticed us ..I felt like putting her back now..but nature rules and I was hungry!! ..and I would only expect this from Pike they are probably one of the hardiest ..never a musky, trout or bass would I expect this..but I have had perch do the same too..but this eyes freezing thing sounds logical and imagine it could happen in the more extreme side of winter.I will look into this more as I hate to hurt the fish in a disabiling way..that I plan on releasing..
