What would the best thing to catch medium sized pike on?
most of the pike in my area usually don't top 40 in and the biggest i've caught was 32", on a white/gold spinnerbait. just wondering because i have these in-line spinners that i tip with minnows but the pike only follow them and wont hit em' any suggestions?

average water clarity is grenn tinted and lighty stained, heavy weeds in summer, and a heavly stained super dence weedy canal.

any suggestions for either would be greatly appreciated
thanks :)

I would suggest a simple bucktail jig - tie on a 12" - 40 or 60 flourocarbon leader. Rip it through, over or in the vegetaion. Pike respond well to an irratic rip-pause action... some of the great features of this presenation is that it is very durable, very weedless, and pike of all sizes love to pounce on it.
cheers

Arround my area i find using a good old len thompson red devil casting on the weed edge produces lots of pike. As for fishing ontop of thick weed growth floating rapallas are a sure bet. Good luck

Re: What would the best thing to catch medium sized pike on?
There are a lot of lures out there that work great for pike. If the weeds don't come up to the surface I like to use and 8 or 10 inch suick and just jerk it across the top. If you can find the jailbird color it will produce the bigger fish. Perch and firetiger work great for smaller fish. Bucktail spinners work great too and will take pike of all sizes. The storm wildeye swimshads are one of my favorite baits for all species. Again I would stick to the brighter colors, like chartreuse and goldfish. Spiiner baits and daredevils ad also a sure bet. The best daredevil or spoon type lure that I have found are the lindy gator spoons. The are a diamond spoon with an anodized coating so they give off a tremendous amount of flash. I actually caught over 30 pike from 15 to 34 inches on a chartreuse with red head gator spoon in one day. The finish was pretty much gone by the end of the day but it was worth every penny of the $4.50 I spent on the spoon.

I hope this helps, good luck fishin.

The best luck I've ever had with catching pike is with a #5 Mepps Aglia spinner bait. They are dependable during any weather. I don't really have a favorite color, but my family members love white tailed, or yellow tailed with a firetiger spinner. They are good for shallower lakes with weeds 5-1 feet below the surface, but if you don't reel fast enough they are weed catchers for sure. My favorite thing about this bait is that I've caught anything from a bluegill to a musky on them! Even the biggest #5 size.

My vote for the quantity of pike would be the in-line spinners hands down. Mepps are my go-to baits when the fishings tough, and they seem to get the pike's attention. I agree with the larger rapalas and suicks mentioned also, but if I were in your situation I would hit the weed canal real early in the morning and then on a cloudy, darker day. Those two conditions are when I find bigger pike out roaming. If you can't get a big one to hit on a fast in-line spinner catch a few smaller ones outta the spot and then work the same area with a slower, bigger bait like a Rapala.

I've never caught a pike or muskie. Hope to some day. It is good to have goals ;)

Re: What would the best thing to catch medium sized pike on?
The pike in my area really are attracted to a Hula grup by Yamamoto, or Gonzo grub with an 1/8 oz jig head. A problem you may run into with this rig would be weeds. But for the amount of fish I catch vs the amount of weeds I pull in, I feel it is worth it. For the kind of water you are talking about "green tinted and lightly stained." I would go with a green pumpkin. Any kind of color that looks like it belongs in the water should do well. I try to stay away from high contrasting colors. It stands to reason that if it looks like it is hiding in the lake/river by mimiking the colors of the surrounding area, it would be more attractive to a fish.

I use 8lb Gamma (flourocarbon) all summer long and regularly catch pike and muskie in the 20-30" range, as well as plenty of largemouth bass using the same rig. The only downside is that I do loose a fair share of hooks and bait to the pike and muskie. I could solve this by using heavier line or a steel leader, but I just really have never been a fan of either. Hope you catch a bunch!

We catch a lot of medium to big pike in our area using 1/8 or 1/4 oz shaky jigs with a green pumpkin Gary Yamamoto Hula Grub. Just cast it out and retrieve it in a brisk yet eratic retrieve. If the area is weedy try to run it just above the weeds or on the outside edge of the weedline near deep water.

top water spook, depending on the day, if its sunny out use a bright colored spook or when its evening to sunset try using a black and silver, it usually imitates shad/shiner. works great!

try fishing during the evening when the sunset is going down, thats when big pikes start biting,(for me) look around if you see any ripples in the water, it usually indicates bait fish and big fish are feeding off them

Re: What would the best thing to catch medium sized pike on?
I know this is an old post, but in Ontario my most consistent medium (26"- 35") pike catcher was always a bomber long 'a' in firetiger. It only dives about 3ft on a fast retrieve, and stays much shallower on a twitch and pause retrieve. I like to cast in the same spot at least a half dozen times, varying the retrieve each time. Then I will cast, let it sit, and jerk. That is usually when the stubborn ones hit. I have caught bigger pike on other stuff, but this was always my most reliable- I always keep 3 new ones in my box. It works well here in Wisconsin too, but I catch much smaller pike on it and a lot of bass. You will get 'weeded up' often with three trebles, but trust me, it's worth it.

It's all because your momma can't cast and your daddy don't like to troll

We use the 6" Maniac Minnows in juvenile perch and smoke blue pearl, but we also use Mepps Buck tail spinners and husky jerks.
