What lures to use to catch those finicky largemouths?
I have a bit of a dilemma here.
I have about a 1/3 acre pond right off my deck at my house.
I can go to the lake, and catch bass all day long. I have brought a few back home that have ranged between 14 to just about 20 inches and put them in my pond.
I can see them cruising around all day, but here is the problem.
I have fished, and fished, and fished....(you get the point), this pond, and have yet to find anything enticing enough to get them to hit.
I have used live crawlers, Berkley Power Worms, Zoom Flukes, top water frogs, countless crank baits, countless spinner baits, Venom Goby's (as we have HUGE tadpoles in this pond), and have yet to get one of these fish on my line.

Any suggestions?
Pond is 13 feet deep.
Sandy bottom, with lily pads. I have fished the lily pads, the bottom, through the weeks, during the morning wee hours, mid day, and at night.

NO LUCK!

Welcome to Bounty Mr. cjammer! Sounds like a HUGE problem. If I were in your shoes...and I'm not much of a bass hound. I would blow up my rubby raft, toodle around the pond, and just scoop them stubborn devils out with a net!JK Good luck kiddo!Oh love to see more pics on your profile..you have a sweety there!

Cjammer, try a hula popper or jitterbug or maybe do a little fly fishing. They are obviosly eating well which makes it harder.
Let us know what finally works.

Those were a couple that I forgot to mention. I have tried both of those during all hours of the day.
The only thing that I haven't tried yet is fly fishing. Maybe I wil find someone with a fly rod and give it a shot.
I am just under the impression, as you noted, that they are eating very well and thus, making them inactive the majority of the time.

If you cant catch a bass in a pond with a drop shot then you might as well get a stick of dynomite or give up bass fishing!

Drop shot with a 4 inch aarons magic robo worm should do the trick.

What kind of forage besides Tadpoles do they have to eat?I agree with drop shottin'-especially down sizing.Ive had more luck in small ponds with Beetle spins,Road Runners,Pet spoon, small finnese worms, etc.Try to match what they are feeding on.Wacky rig a 3 or 4 inch finnese worm.

Re: Re: What lures to use to catch those finicky largemouths?
Their are small bait fish, frogs, grasshoppers that hit the water, and other typical bugs.
I have tried small Zoom Flukes, Venom Gobie's to match the tadpoles, frog lures, live frogs, live bait, and various other items.
I will have to try a small beetle spin and see what that does.

Re: What lures to use to catch those finicky largemouths?
You might want to add more bass into your pond to increase your chances.

You're best shot at catching them is either using live bait (worm, minnows) under a bobber, or a wackly rigged senko type worm twitched slowly at the bottom.

Personally, I love topwaters, so I would try a 2.5 inch Pop-R fished slowly in the first 2 hours after dawn or 1 before dark until dark. Nothing like those topwater explosions on a still surface.

There is currently 10 largemouth and one small mouth bass in there. I am working on adding more. I add more each week.
I tried fishing some top water lures after my original posts, had five explosions on the surface, but the fish missed it 5 times!! I am beginning to believe these fish may be half way retarded....or could it possibly be the person trying to catch them? That has yet to be determined.

Cjammer get a big popper and put it on a reg pole.Put a bobber about 2ft up the line.
You should probably put some gills in there too. Also put a dozen minows in (shinners)They grow big too.

Re: What lures to use to catch those finicky largemouths?
you say u have lilly pads ,try taking a 10 inch power worm and drag it across the top of the pads when you get to a hole in the veg. let it fall slowly unweighted and when it hits bottom if it does they usually hit it on the descent, but if not let your bait set there for a moment the longer the better, when you do move your bait get ready it could be a subtle bite to a quick hard reaction bite worms never fail texas rig no weight,slug-o,and rattling rouges are excellent bait soft jerkbaits are deadly around any kind of cover also try the drifting matts of hydrilla, hyacinth

Ok...I havve treid everyones suggestions.
I am just under the impression that due to the over abundance of food in the pond, they don't feed often.
The next step is to add a bunch more to thin out the feeding and hopefully induce more strikes.

Re: What lures to use to catch those finicky largemouths?
I think I have it figured out!!
I threw some grass hoppers in the pond this morning. The smaller ones were taken by the bluegills. The larger ones, the gills couldn't take down. The bass came cruising through to check out the noise and nailed the big grass hoppers.

Hence, a Heddon Tiny Torpedo slowly worked parrallel with the shoreline.
Result 2 bass in 4 casts!
