What I did this summer!
I am back from the most remarkable journey having spent most of my summer meeting with some Bounty members as I fished my way across Northern Ontario, filming the entire journey for an upcoming pilot. It was a great pleasure finally meeting with some of our members and fishing with them on their home waters. These individuals are all passionate about their sport, knowledgeable, and all share in the spirit of conservation and preservation of the resource. I was truly fortunate to have met with each one of these members and to have a chance to fish with them and talk to them at great length about their views on fishing and life, their daily concerns and what motivated their passion about fishing. And although each were different, they were all unique, interesting and insightful. They all shared one characterstic - they are all great people! Igor, the Bountymonster from Dunchurch, woukld give you (or anyone who needed it) the shirt off his back. He took great care of us while in his area and made sure we didn't starve one nigfht by bringing us filleted and pre-battered fish as well as the oil. Another day, we had an impromtu shore lunch and Igor the survivalist pulls out a dozzen hots dogs and buns from the folds of his raincoat for the grill. Igor, I love you brother! Next on the hit list was Tyler Dunn from the Soo. Tyler is california cool, laid back, hard-core walleye angler who decided a few years ago that he woulld rather fish than play pro baseball as a southpaw pitcher. He is quiet, unassuming, and a great kid and while we didn't catch any fish the morning we went out on the St-Mary's we did have a great time with him and his uncle Tim (whom we found out Tyler had not even told about Bounty for fear of losing potential income) Thanks again Ty! A few stops later, after having stopped for a few days to fish ouside of Thunder bay and then in Quetico ( what an adventure that was!) I headed off for LOTW to meet with Jratthelake. Wayne, simply put, is the quintessential canadian - hospitable, gracious, intelligent, soft-spoken. We hit if off immediately, as if we were old friends that had known each other for years. He is part of the pro staff at Witch bay camp and he is as knowledgable and passionate about the lake and the fishery as anyone. In his position Wayne is a great mentor, both to older and younger clients, as well as the other guides and his uppermost concern is always for the fishery. While catching is an important part of fishing for most people Wayne is equally concerned about the other side, which involved the practice of appropriate release techniques and sustainable fishing practices. Kudos wayne!!! WBC sector is in good hands with Wayne in the neighborhood. Hope you nail my girl on the cross dude cause I know she'll be in good handsandwill still be there waiting for me next year! (PS: thanks to you and Brad re-supplying my journey home I made it back safely! I owe you one!) Despite the fact we did not catch the big girls we were looking for and that we were basically unable to fish due to inclement weather and gale force winds we spent time with Wayne and the other camp guests and employees and had a great time. He has also done a great job promoting Bountyfishing among the guests at WBC and is certainly responsable for several of our members as i met a few while I was there. Brad and Bird, love you boys, you are the best dock technicians in the Northern hemisphere! You boys Rock! Next was Toronto, home of greg Amiel. Waht can I say about Greg that most of you don't already know. Greg is a fierce competitor, passionate, humble, always eager to help out someone in terms of information, technique, strategy or locations. Greg (like all the others) is a class act. Fishing with Greg on lake Ontario was like a doctorate tutorial on great lakes fishing for Chinook salmon. Greg has developed an impressive pattern for these fish and is constantly tinkering with colours, speeds, his eye contantly on his sonar, adjusting his depths according to the screen, referring to his dipsey conversion charts, scoping the horizon for feeding cormorants...he is constantly working for these fish, truly impressive to watch at work. I learned a trememdous amount watching him - he is a consumate professional in every way. I also watched him calmly talk my cameraman - whose previous largest fish was a three pound bass - and help him land a ballistic 15 lb. chinnok snagged in the belly. There is a reason Greg is one of the top money winners on this site and it has everything to do with great skills, fiery passion, and a competitive spirit! Thanks brother, for everything! . Myself, I walked away from this experience with a great deal of fondness and admiration for all these amazing individuals and their passion for the sport and respect for the resource. I am certain had I met all of our members it would be the same. Bounty members are a special breed and we are all a fraternity bonded by our love of fishing and the outdoors. God Bless all of you and have a great summer! Over and Out! Ari
