Preferred how, on a plate or to catch. The Largemouth bass is the most sought after game fish in this country

Bass are the top sporting fish in the world but if your looking for the best eating fish I would go with the walleye or large perch(same family)
I'd say Largemouth Bass
close second...Mountain Trout

Largemouth Bass, Crappie, SmallMouth Bass......But to me nothing is better than catching a 30lb or bigger Catfish feels like your fighting with a truck

For eating I prefer rainbow trout or white crappie. For catching I prefer the largemouth bass. For entertainment value nothing beats a bucket of worms and a pond full of Bluegills.

largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill/sunfish, trout, pike, catfish, perch...all of them are fun to catch. Largemouth bass is the best though

. One freshwater fish you want to try to avoid are dogfish (bowfin). I caught one once and it made a noise like a bark and it kept snapping at me to try to bite me. If you are looking for some to eat, i would go with bluegil, sunfish, and perch.

Here in Michigan, its probably Salmon. They grow big and taste good. We have King, Atlantic, Coho, and Pink Salmon. I personally like fishing for "freak" fish, such as gar, burbot, dog fish, sturgeon and other bottom feeders. Catching bass, pike, and walley are good fighting fish, but catching them takes little skill...

Really depends on what part of the states you are from. Here in SE Tennessee it is LM, SM, Crappie, Catfish, Stripe, Trout, and Bluegill.

I like catching anything, they are all fun to catch. For eating, crappie, walleye, and flathead catfish. As for catfish, I will eat nothing but flatheads. The old saying, you are what you eat applies heavily to catfish. Flatheads are strictly predators. They only eat living things. This has a major impact on how they taste. Channel cats and blues tend to be predatory but they also scavenge which means they eat any piece of organic garbage they come across and this impacts the flavor of the fish. channel cats taste like crap compared to flatheads. Blues are not so bad but they can not compare to a flathead.
I fish almost every day of the year. I like to catch anything that is biting at the time. I will even catch a bunch of bluegill if nothing else seems to be grabbing my lures. When I do fill the livewell with bluegill, I will fillet them, season them, then put them in the dehydrator or smoker. They make fantastic jerky. Bluegill jerky is a great item to have in the boat. I rarely get any in the boat though because my children seem to eat it all before I have time to get any in the boat. If you have never tried bluegill jerky, I highly recommend you try it soon. You will be extremely pleased and have a new treat to keep on the boat or snack for the children.

For eating: HANDS DOWN Crappie, unless it's a crappy crappie then it's all really crappy, not crappie. For fun I'd say Bass. But Catfish on light tackle is a BLAST!!! It's pretty close but I'd go with my light tackle cats.

Id say my favorite fish to catch is smallmouth bass in summer. But spring fishing definatley a trophy rainbow trout Out of the local deerfield river here in western massachsuetts. The largemouths around here are lazy and let you drag them in :/

Give me fish with teeth and I will stay happy as long as I am catching them...preferably pike, but I love me some larry fishing.

You guys are all missing the boat on this one IMO.
Sturgeon would rank #1 in eating and fighting. Nothing like seeing your rod screaming line out as a 200lb fish comes completely out of the water doing tail walks and is splashing both sides of the river banks in the process. However here in BC we can no longer keep them but a few years back we could.

BROOKIES!!
They're populations in the Appalachian Trail keep declining, making them a very prized and sought after fish to catch. Not to mention their insane colors!

I'm a bass fisherman, but the only fish that I will eat is Walleye, especially the cheeks. They are rare in Truman Lake, MO, but when you catch one its big. About 10 years ago, I was killing the bass on spinnerbaits on a summer morning. Then, I caught a walleye that took both hands to get around. But I wasn't hungry for Walleye, I doubted that it would live in a livewell in the summer and I was anxious to catch more bass. So I threw it back without weighing it. My next biggest Walleye was 7.5 lb. that I caught in Arkansas in the late 1970's. This Walleye was much bigger than that one.
Walleye will hit most bass lures including plastic worms, but not topwater.

I live in mid-St. Louis County and have a vacation home on Truman Lake, MO which is just west of Lake of the Ozarks and closer to KC than StL. The flooding in St. Louis County is in way southwest county on the Meramec River, which is loaded with Smallmouth Bass. Truman Lake is rapidly rising, but my house is at the top of a big hill. So I am not near the flooding. Flooding in Pacific and Eureka, MO is nothing new.
In the 1970's the Corp of Engineers planned a dam on the Meramec to stop the flooding. However, the environmentalist killed the dam by finding an endangered minnow in a cave that would have been flooded by the lake and thus threatening the minnow.

yeah it entirely depends on wher eu live in the states. here iin WA we dont have much of anything besides trout, bass, catfish and perch. for fighters i absolutlesy LOVE hooking a monster rainbow on a fly rod! theres nothing better! for eats i like em too. but if you can snag a real nice bass or perch or catfish in the swamps its a hoot. all of them are delicious, but trout and perch are the best!
