The Night Before Fishing
T’was the night before fishing, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, except me and the computer mouse.
The rods were all rigged and placed by the door with care,
In hopes that that big snook still would be there.
My head would not clear so I’d check the weather site,
wind five to ten, I think it will be alright.
The alarm won’t sound cause I already turned it off,
I sneak out of the house without even a cough.
Down with the trailer jack the trailer ball clattered,
That ramp will be packed, time is of matter.
The red sky was forming as dark slipped away,
That ramps never empty, gonna be a good day.
I unloaded the boat so smoothly and quick,
I knew in short time I’d be casting that Ugly Stick.
“Now flounder! Now, tarpon! Now, bluefish and grouper!
On, sheepshead, On seabass! On redfish and snapper!”
To the bow and the stern I run back and forth,
I cast away on a heading due north.
I drop the anchor as I approach the spot,
the wind whips me around and I cleat off the knot.
A jumbo shrimp fitted to the end of the hook,
A side armed cast skipping it into the nook.
The scream of the PowerPro never sounded so fine,
as a big fish grabbed it and was dragging out line.
I fought it away from the dock and the trees,
I danced around the boat with a tremble in my knees.
Avoiding the anchor the fish made a dash,
Then an airborne leap followed with a SPLASH!
I scrambled to get the Boga as the fish ran again,
But after some coaxing the tool clipped its chin.
A quick photograph of this linesider friend,
Then back to the waters where it would live to fight again.
Hands shaking the fish swam off without suffer,
I rig up again, “maybe I’ll get another.”
After a great day of fishing I called it a day,
Reverse heading due south and quickly make way.
A smooth run back to the ramp, now the dock is in sight,
Tight lines to all and to all a good night!!
