Need help FAST!!! River fishing for smallmouth and pike.
Posted Thu Oct 1, 2009 3:19 pm Need help FAST!!! River fishing for smallmouth and pike.
I have a buddy that talks alot of crap. We are fishing tomorrow morning in the river. I am not a river fisherman! Small mouths and pike are abundunt. It is a farily fast moving river. Some rocky places here and there. Stained/brown water. I NEED to outfish this guy to shut him up.
Throw me some ideas. I am mostly a LM fan, but I need to kick his butt.
Help please!!!!
EDIT: WE WILL BE ON FOOT. NO BOAT!

Try some topwater plugs in near the shorelines, such as rebel pop-r's, has been working for me lately. Also try dropshotting a gulp minnow or such.GL !

If you have a 2 rod permit I would Lindy Rig in a hole behind or infront of debri with shad tipped with a nightcrawler. Anchor that baby down! Then take your other Rod and throw some cranks or jigheads with at least 3" plastic and where your murky make sure you get black in your color scheme.Look for ripples and cast upstream and across the river as far as you can then bump the bottom(jigs)or reel with the flow of river(cranks) right across the ripple to you. Sometimes twitch that lure especially if you bump a ripple. Stay close to your other rod and watch it while your movin and shakin the other rod. Your bound to tag something. I'm not experienced at Pike on river( Tiggers on lake mostly) but have caught alot of smallies on river. They lurk in debris by ripples right now in my waters. Movers and shakers good luck Kiddo! Mikey's right the drop shot is a catcher too! I wonder what your depths and width are on that river?

Thanks for the input guys.
I have no idea on the depth of the river. I know it is wide though. If I use a heavy spoon, I may be able to hit the other side, but that will be pushing it.
I talked to my brother, who fishes rivers a lot. He recommended going with a black Kalin grub, texas rigged, with the nose weight pegged with a toothpick and bottom bouncing.

There ya go he's all over it plus knows the waters I'll bet! That jighead will work if you got the right weight on it for the current...Texas rig is cool for current action water too! Get that Lindy rig anchored down on the side and show your buddy up dude! Go get em and don't forget to tip it with a nighty crawler!

Try topwater just like you would for LM, I guarantee some nice fish!

Top water didn't seem to work.
Nothing really did.
Used a Baby T Minus, orange and chartruse. Had a BIG smallie on. He hit hard near some rocks, burned off some line, jumped a few times, and I lost him. The guy that I wanted to beat didn't get a hit! So I guess I technically one since no fish were landed, but I had one on.
But....WATCH OUT!! Next week is the free small mouth tournament. I saw this fish when he jumped a couple times. I think this one would have been pushing the top of the leader board. Watch for me next week!! I am going to ignore that spot for a bit so he gets comfortable again...then....I kick some butt. Hopefully!
