Need CATFISH in the schedule

NO CATFISH in the tourneys and only one carp, I can't believe it. All you catfish anglers reply and let's get some catfish tournaments on the schedule!

We can still try to beat Hoggy Boys(Aaron Weibe) Bounty starting May 26 (Bounty Challenge!).
Smiles Gotta find that Monster Kitty Kat! They won't do Blues and Flats cause they get too big to measure without hurting the fish.

Posted Wed May 21, 2008 8:16 am Re: Re: Need CATFISH in the schedule
Catfish are tough, it won't hurt them any. 2 years ago, I caught a 49" flathead and the guy that was fishing with me wanted it in his pond. We hung the fish from the side of the boat with the stringer through the jaw, not the gills. We continued to fish for another 4 hours until the sun came up. We called the guys wife and she met us at the boat ramp with a horse tank in the back of her pickup. We stuck the fish in the tank and she headed home and released the fish into the pond. 2 weeks ago, My friend was fishing for bass in his pond and hooked that flathead on a plastic worm. After fighting the fish for an hour, he landed it, measured it, and released it. It is now 56" long and in fine health. He has only put 4 flatheads in his pond and the others were added last year with the longest being 32" and over the course of a year, a 32" catfish can not grow to 56" so the only fish that it could have been was the big one we added 2 years ago.
Don't underestimate the toughness of a catfish, they can survive being measured just fine and live to be caught another day.

That’s the problem... Who can compete with the Red River?

Posted Sun May 18, 2008 12:51 pm Re: Re: Re: Need CATFISH in the schedule
Blue cats and flatheads can :D
Turn it around, make them compete with us (in the U.S) rather than vice versa. The odds of 5 people busting into monster cats in the US and getting bounties for them isn't all THAT great, I'd say at least one red river fish would make it.
Hi there :)

well if they can do a north/ south largemouth tourney then why not a north south channel cat tourney??? Think about it. It's the same thing. I think there is some bass fishing industry influence behind the scenes called the shots.

I can compete with red river dont know about 41" but we have caught some 38's !!!! The bay is loaded with them and the moira river since adding new deeper spawning beds and dropping truck loads of rocks has made it a cat factory! I say Cat's a must on the schedule, more for MA then anyone she loves her cats and shes going to miss them if there not in the bounty!!!!

I don't know if this is possible or not; but wouldn't it be better to have the catfish tournament during week 35 (the same week as the red fish tourney)? This would let everyone focus on the first North/South Bass Tourney for week 34. Also, most of the channel cat fishers don't have immediate access to Redfish.

I'm in for catfish. I would be much happier if we had flatheads and blues added to the list. If it is a bass week, I may even sign up for that one. I use big live sunfish as bait and all my biggest catfish are caught in less than 3' of water along weed beds. Every now and then when something makes a run on my bait, I will set the hook and instead of a catfish, it is a big bass. I have caught some of the biggest bass I have ever caught while fishing for catfish and at night when I fish for cats, those big bass are moving along the weed beds looking for a meal right along with the cats.
Count me in for catfish tourny but it sure would be nice to see flatheads and blues show up on the list one day.

Bounty cannot do flatheads or blues because of the size they get. It is too hard to measure and photo that big without hurting the fish. Bounty Team has indicated this before that's one of the reasons Sturgeon is not a Bounty fish.
Glad to see you in Kiddo! I wanna see them 20llbers! They are cool but I catch 1 if I'm lucky per season.

Posted Wed May 21, 2008 10:35 am Re: Re: Re: Need CATFISH in the schedule
I will have a cat to enter but a 20lb channel will not go 38". A 20lb to 25lb channel will go 32" depending on the circumference of it's girth, a 38" to 41" channel would probably set a new state record for Kansas. The best shot at a state record would be in the fall around here when the cats gorge themselves on shad before winter. I have caught some in early October that are as big around as they are long, they look like a puffer fish.
Topping one of those 38"+ channels from the Red River will be tough but I may know of a place where I can make it happen. The creek is famous for it's crappie and most people forget that big cats roam those waters also. Very few people fish for cats there and I have caught some really big flatheads there and a few good channels. I usually throw back channels, I don't like the way they taste but I keep to 20lb to 40lb flatheads releasing the flatheads over 40lbs. My in-laws were coming to visit and they don't know the difference between a good tasting fish and one that tastes like crap so I did keep a few channels that night. When I cleaned them I opened up the gut to see what they had been eating and found they were full of 8" to 10" crappie. The flatheads from there are always stuffed with crappie but it surprised me a little to find the channels were eating the same thing, I expected them to be eating crawdads.

Posted Wed May 21, 2008 11:10 am Re: Re: Re: Re: Need CATFISH in the schedule
Trace your right! I just checked Utah records there all 39" in records around 32llbs! WOW I may have thrown records away. Mine in N Utah are long and skinny! I only keep the 3-5llbers or so if I catch them on the side of the channel. I usually bring them home and let them swim around in the kiddie pool(fresh water) for a day, then soak the fillets in salt water for 24 hours, then freeze them in buttermilk.
Thanks I need to pay closer attention to my records here!
Smiles Always!

Posted Wed May 21, 2008 12:10 pm Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Need CATFISH in the schedule
It is a good idea to be aware of what the records are in your area because you never know when you may have hooked the next record. This year I want to try and land the world line class record for flatheads on 4lb and 6lb test line. The easy part is getting a hook in fish that are big enough, I can catch fish big enough to break those records every single night but the problem will be getting them into deeper open water where I can fight them. Every time I go fishing no matter what species I am after, I will be looking for places that will hold big flatheads but are close enough to deep open water where I might have the chance to fight the fish without it running up into some cover where I will break my line. I usually fish with no less than 20lb test with 80lb test on my heavy rigs when I am on the hunt for real monsters. I got a wild hair up my butt at the moment though and I want to try and get a world line class record. It may seem a bit insane and I doubt I can do it but you never know until you try so I am going to give it a shot.

It is true that red river cats are hard to beat, but I'd still like to see blues added to the schedule. I do 90% of my fishing here in East Texas, and the only species I can get to that are on the schedule are crappy, largemouth bass and bluegill. Having blue catfish on there would give me more opportunities to participate in the contests.
Best,

So I said that morning I bet you'll do what you do best and catch a bigger fish an hour before the tournys over.... hour was left and BANG, I knew instantly either cat or sheephead but when they keep on bottom you know it's a cat!!!! Ok so here’s the story. At this rate I’m fairly certain that this thread will get the “40” people...
Regardless, the interest is evident. Channel Cats it is. Week 34.

Don’t hold me to this… it’s still early in the week and anything can happen before Sunday midnight. Currently this week’s Regional Catfish Tournament is shaping up to be the best opportunity to date, to win money on Bounty.
The new regional format/ little lead time has caught a lot of members sleeping.
Enjoy
