I think it would make more sense to wait for all Northern areas to open first. Ontario opens the last weekend in June, not sure about the Northern states.

Northern states don't close bass Phil.
They just have a catch and release program which makes much more sense.

Michigan is closed from December 31 - Saturday before Memorial day. catch and release season is the month of May. other than that we are not allowed to target bass at all
It is the hunt that makes the kill,, not the kill that makes the hunt!

I don't understand why the need to wait for the tourney. I live in Maine and catch bass all year round, through the ice as well. Why wouldn't they have bass north tourneys all year round?

Most zones in ontario do not open until the end of june, thats why there are no tournys, as you go further north seasons on bass do not exsist.

I understand that the seaons are shorter or in some cases non existent but why cant the people who can fish have a chance and they can either wait or fish all the other species. Lets face it the real north areas have a much greater advantage with trout and especially salmon. I just don't think it's fair to put a choke on some of the more southern of the northern areas because they're not all open. At least give us a country wide tourney, unless the southerners are afraid us yanks might show em up every once in a while.

Why couldnt a Northern resident enter a southern tourny if they are within the laws to fish? The zones were brought into play to allow Northern Bass to compete on an even field as no northern fish were hitting the boards in the past.... I recall one nice fish caught in Canada in a past tourny and it didnt win !!! I say if you want to compete with the big dogs and your laws allow it they should be allowed to compete, can someone clarify if there is a rule that states a northern resident cant fish in a southern tourny>>? It seems in my opinion if they want to compete and are within laws, they pay and play!!!

I'm sorry; but I believe there should be Largemouth North tournament for this time of year. There are a number of states in the North region that can compete this time of year. For most of us in the North, this is about the only time of year that a Northern bass fisherman can put some big numbers on the board.
I understand that there are certain areas that unfortunately cannot compete right now; but I don't think the whole Northern Region should be excluded from a tournament. I relate it to the tournaments for Redfish, Sea Trout, and even Channel Cats & Walleye. A person from Pennsylvania like myself can join these tournaments; but we don't have a chance in hell of winning them. PA's state records don't even compete with the bounty records on the latter 2 species. Even though that may be true, I don't believe those tournaments should be canceled just because I am not in the best geographic area for those fish.
I also don't believe that Northern Bass fisherman should be lumped in with the South during this time of year. The Bass tournaments were separated into 2 areas because of genetics and growing season. It was a way to make Bass fishing competitive to everyone who chooses to compete.
In the past, we used to have poll's to see if a tournament was offered, how may people would actually fish in it. If there is any doubt in admin's mind on whether they would get enough people to have a Largemouth North tournament, let's put a poll out there and see what all the members think.

Really good ponts! I'm not the best with words but thats what I'm getting at and my appreciation goes out to the northerners backing me up on this one. The tournaments are completey voluntary so I'm feeling like there must be more to this. If we're going on the logic that bass in the north don't grow as large on average as the south it makes sense to me that we can have our own tourneys; harder to compete and a shorter season. But this site is voluntary, so no one HAS to sign up for any one competition. Let the angler decide if they have a fighting chance.

If there can be enough participants for some north lm bass tournies then go nuts. I dont care if our season isnt open yet, if it can be done legally in the northern states im all for it. I will just sit back relax and watch the leader board as i always do. HAVE AT ER BOYS

I think there should be one on the week of May 18-24. The 23rd is when MN and it sounds like MI open up. It is also Memorial Day weekend, so I would think plenty of us would have time or being going somewhere to fish. Even if our Canadian friends can't fish, there would be plenty of participation.
BTW, I do not think it is an issue of whether or not people can fish and catch fish this time of year or not, its more that if half of the northern region cannot fish, then there will not be enough participation to make the tournament pay for itself.
