Is this a Shad or Small Mouth Bass?
I caught this last weekend. It didn't fight as hard as a Shad and it was not in a school (in the river I got it from the Shad are still schooled up). I think it is a small mouth bass (a couple decades ago, my dad and uncle used to catch a bunch in the hole that I got it from), but my friend thinks it's a Shad, so we have a bet going. What do you think? Everyone I talked to said small mouth, and people he talks to say Shad. Help!

Re: Is this a Shad or Small Mouth Bass?
Thanks for the replys, how can you tell? I thought it was a little too green to be a Shad, but when I look at the tail, it is sharp like a Shad. I usually only fish trout and salmon, so I'm trying to get better at fish I.D.ing.

Re: Re: Is this a Shad or Small Mouth Bass?
The easiest way for you to Identify your fish would to 1 go on to the internet and google California fresh water fish or 2 just wait for some one on here to tell you.I normally do a search for fl. fish if I don't know what one is. Good luck ! Bassindow

Re: Is this a Shad or Small Mouth Bass?
defintely not a smallmouth nor an american shad, possibly a threadfin shad or other shad genus. Best way to identify is either through internet or by contacting Fish & Game in your area to get a listing of the fish indigenous to the state waters. have fun! Ari

Re: Is this a Shad or Small Mouth Bass?
That is a shad sometimes called a sheep shad or river herring. Shad were introduced to the west coast by Seth Green, a fish culturist, who released 10,000 fry into the Sacramento River near Tehama in 1871. An additional 800,000 fish were released over the next ten years.

Shad have established populations in over a dozen California rivers, including the Russian, Klamath and Feather as well as the Umpqua, Coos, Suislaw and Coquille rivers in Oregon.

Male shad mature in three years and the females in four. Shad are an anadromous species but unlike salmon do not necessarily return to the stream of their birth. The spawning runs begin in March or April with the bulk of the run following in June or July. Mature shad weigh 3 to 6 pounds.

Makes an excellent cut bait for catfish or trout bait with smaller live ones.

If your to busy to fish, then your to dam busy!

Hey Troutfishingirl WELCOME to Bounty!! The guys are right... not a Smallie! That sweetie is surely in the Whitefish family! In your waters they are so similar to Salmon and fresh water Trout yet it's a sub family of (Salmonidae) or species(Coregonus clupeaformis).
Shad?? Now I call alot of things Shad....especially if their little!lol
Your's too big!

Shad or mooneye is my guess as well. Ma, we get shad up to 9 lbs that run right through Montreal every spring.

Re: Is this a Shad or Small Mouth Bass?
I was fishing a local pond with a buzz bait and the I had as many 5 6" to 10" fish trying to school with my lure. I asked a guy what they where and he said bass. I kept watching them and I thought there is no way those are bass. They had a fork tail just like the fish you are holding.

Re: Is this a Shad or Small Mouth Bass?
there are many types of each species of fish like pike /muskie/chain pickerel all similar and hard to tell apart at small sizes, but it it definitly part of the shad family forked tail and silvery sheen are givaways but once you see enough smallies they are unmistakingly different kinda like minni groupers with different colors..up in ontario, so many smallmouth it is not funny.

fish on...
