Is this a good Flathead spot?
I have never fished for flathead but with the increase in it's popularity within Pittsburgh city limits i decided it is time to step up to the big leagues of catfishing. I am curious as to my usual fishing spot (pictured below with description also).

I fish from that horseshoe shaped inlet. There is a shallow shelf with a steep drop off about 15 feet out from shore. There is a runoff drain to the right and the structure off shore looks like a small bridge pier. You can see by the white specks in the photo how the current runs strong further out but is calm closer in. Depending on how many barges are docked to the left that is sometimes a narrower gap. Also sometimes there is a barge docked right at the end of the wall where i fish from. The river bottom at this location is solid and rocky. I believe there is a tree/trunk at the bottom between shore and pier (something solid in there has claimed many a lure anyways).

Just before sunset i catch a lot of bass right there and have seen a small muskie feeding there. (wouldnt take my lure tho, grrr lol). At night i always get some carp on the shelf and i catch a lot of channel cat just off the shelf where it drops off.

What do you guys think? I'd hate to share space with people at the lock and dam, but i will if i must. What can i say, i like my goto spot and especially my solitude, lol.

To me fishing aint about the fish, it's about the fishing!

Fish the deepest part of the drop off in the hottest part of the day. Here's the tricky part that most people don't know: (Luckily, some of my ancestors would remind you of the extras from the movie Deliverance, but man they know their catfishing!) Bigger bait doesn't mean bigger fish when it comes to Flatheads. When the water heats up, the big ones congregate in the deep holes and get lazy. Drop a small minnow (no bigger than your index finger) with a 3/8 ounce weight to keep it on the bottom in the current. Make sure the weight is about 18 inches above your hook. The old timers have been doing it this way down here forever and it should work in PA. Good luck!
