Posted Fri Jun 8, 2007 9:56 pm Re:Favorite Reel
You know,,,these days they make so many reels it's hard to find a favorite. I have been a Stradic fan since the first day but so many make the cut. Penn makes a great open faced level wind ( How long has the Senator been around) Once you put 50lb on, the drag can be two Stainless washers and it doesn't make much difference. Unless you want the I.G.F.A.
How many ball bearings can you put in a reel?
My thoughts,,,,just stick to the basics. Get a reel matched to the rod in weight. Make sure you have a gear ratio that matches the type of fishing you do.......and take care of the damned thing.
I've personally pulled in 100lb Tarpon on 12lb test. (not recommended,,it's bad for the fish).
Just buy gear that suits your needs. "And make sure it's pretty"

I've used and destroyed a lot of reels over the years. A few from just about every major manufacturer I'm sure. I rely mostly on Daiwa now, although I have a few pets that are still great for specific applications. Nothing wrong with the old Abu 6500's and 7000's for durability, but the newer models just keep getting smoother and lighter, and if you buy quality, they will last you a long time.

I have a Quantum Energy PT baitcaster. They make GREAT reels. But I would have to say Shimano is number 1. In my opinion you can't buy a better reel for any price! I'm going to get a citica in a few weeks, they're not that expensive about $120.00 but they make reels for ANY budget.

I go with the Pfluger 6740 for the fact that it posesses 10 ball bearings and costs a mere $80.00 CDN. I own 10 of these reels and the reason.... The most bang for the buck !!!!!! Then if you really want to spend some serious $$$$$$$ then you must have a Shimano Stella 3000FB as this baby must be tried.

I have used all types in the past, but after working at fishing lodges and seeing the amazing abuse the camp gear handles year after year (shimano), I am a hundred percent calcutta and stradic :)
Treat yourself to a nice reel, as it will outlast several cheaper ones...

I have agree with others about the Shimano. The most versatile reel I have is the Shimano Chronarch MG. I have it mounted on a Shimano IM8 medium action graphite rod. The combo weighs next to nothing and I have one with 6lb test florocarbon and another with 8lb florocarbon. I have caught everything from crappie to a 23lb flathead with them. The flathead was pure accident, I was pulling crankbaits down the face of a dam and the flathead was hiding in the rocks. If I had not been close to deep open water, I may not have landed it so luck played a big part in it especially considering I was using only 6lb test line at the time. It is far from the biggest catfish I ever landed but it was by far the biggest I have ever landed on such light line. It was a lot of fun and that very light Chronarch MG worked like a charm. It was right after that when I ordered my 2nd one.

This past summer I set myself up with a Chronarch reel mounted on a Crucial rod. I have to say it is a great combination for Largemouth/ Smallmouth... I basically fish baitcasters exclusively, the Chronarch is my first low profile reel. It's incredible!
R
Posted Wed Jan 30, 2008 9:10 am Re: Favorite Reel
If you like the Chronarch, you will love the Chronarch 50 MG. I tend to use light line a lot, very often, line that is to light for the situation but I feel that I catch more fish with light line, it does make for a great fight. The Chronarch MG weighs only 5.9 ounces as apposed to the Chronarch which weighs 9 ounces. The MG is incredible when loaded with 6 or 8lb test. I have my MG mounted on a Shimano Compre rod and that rod and reel feel like it becomes part of your body when you pick it up. The problem with most baitcasters is that they tend to be made to handle heavier line but not the MG, it is a light line specialist. Shimano outdid themselves when they created the Chonarch MG, it is spectacular.

I mentioned in a previous post in this thread that I am extremely happy with my Shimano Cronarch MG 51 although for those that prefer to reel right handed, the MG 50 is the same model not that it really matter though. Anyway, I had been using my MG51 on a Shimano Compre medium action rod and was absolutle blown away by the performance of this combo with 8lb florocarbon. 3 weeks ago I made a change, I switched my MG 51 from the Compre (an IM8) to a Shimano Cumara (an IM10) rod and I switched from the 8lb florocarbon to 30lb braid which is 8lb diameter. The performance of the MG51 on the Cumara is 10 times better on the higher quality rod. I can feel fish sniffing my bait from 20 yrds away. I switched to the braided line because of the summer weed growth and the braid is better suited for the weeds than the floro. Once again, the performance of this little reel with braid has far surpassed my expectations. Once cold weather comes and the weeds die off, I will go back to florocarbon line because it seems more suitable for the conditions of the lake but for summer fishing, the braid is preforming spectacular at the moment and the Cumara Rod is nothing less than amazing. If you want a super light baitcaster for light or heavy work, the Shimano Chronarch MG is unbeatable.

Shimano Trinidad, 6:1:1 gear ratio, holds alot of line and has a pretty solid drag system, as far as spinning equipment van Staal and shimano stella. The stella is abit smoother, but the van shaal has superior drag.

I for bass, trout, crappie, walleye, and everything except catfish, I have dumped every thing I have a gone strictly Shimano. I tried a Pfluger and it was the only thing close to Shimano. I already have pre-ordered the new Curado E series. They are supposed to be available and shipped in August. I liked the Curado D but at 9.8 ounces, it was to heavy. The Curado E is 7.6 ounces, not as light as my Shimano Core or Chronarch MG but within the weight I like. 8 ounces or less is what I like so the Curado fits what I want. If it is half as tough as the old Curado with less weight, it will be better than anything else any other company makes.

It all depends on what I am doing.
Flipping. Chronarch bsv.
Crankin Ardent xs1000
spinning either my stella 2500 or the vanstall vs150. the line capacity is insane.
innovation: Daiwa viento i love this reel for any slow wormin action the twitchin bar is great fun
in my opinion the cheaper shimano reels live up to the rep, "Shitmano" now saying this will yield a lot of controversy but know i have six shimano reels and have had to replace drags on 5 and bail arms twice on my stellas. they dont seem to fair well with a lot of abuse, which should be expected when you pay $600 for a reel.
I think there are so many great reels out there for less but it just depends on what type of fishing you are doing. the new curado's have won a ton of awards and deservingly so as they are both under $200 and get the job done quite well. thanks for the question.

I used to like the Curado 200, but they stopped making it. I really like the new Citica 200. It has been a great reel for both salt and fresh water. On the cheaper side, H2O Express has a great little reel called the Maraud. I bought one in Nov. 08 and have had little to no problems with it. I can't see spending more than $125 for a reel with the quality that is available these days. The fish don't know what they are caught with.
