Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
I know this may sound like a dumb question, but I came home from work yesterday and my youngest said that I was bad because I hurt the fish. Having never really thought about it before, I wonder if anyone here can perhaps shed some light as to this? Can fish feel pain?

Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
A scientific study was once done to determine if fish experienced pain. Since the fish had no reaction to pain stimuli, it was surmised that fish lack pain receptors and therefore "feel" no pain

Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
Fish obviously have a mouth and a jaw, but I have never seen nor heard of one having lips. Some fish such as catfish and croakers do make a squeaking, groaning like sound when caught or handled. This is a warning alert to the other fish of impending danger. Not an utterance of agony.

Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
This question was raised when catch and release started to get popular and people were concerned that the fish that were being caught were hurt. Of course, it speaks volumes that the same fish can be caught time and time again, after all, a dog that gets hit when it pees on the carpt will learn eventually that that action will bring about a negative reaction. Fish dont seem to have this response, so it would seem that pain is meaningless to them.

Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
Even if they did feel pain, do you think that fishing would be changed? We slaughter cows and chickens and other cattle for their meat, why should fishing be any different?

Thing is, the hooks are cutting deep into their skin. That GOTTA hurt.

Mammals scream and show pain when they are hurt during hunting, and yet hunting is still legal, practised and socially acceptable. What difference is there between fishing and hunting in this regard?

I gotta a feeling your child got one of those PETA Flyers that shows a man on front and it explains how children's elders hurt fish by hooking them, it's a sad state when animal activists try to take the fun out of a child! I would have a very long deep discussion if it was my child starting with a fishing rod in hand and making them tie there own hook on and then put the worm on and then the capture of a fish and then make them clean it and enjoy the sweet taste of the animal we have ate for 1000's of years! Sorry to rant but that's my opinion.

Martycoo is right. The PETA freaks have a campaign about "hurting the poor fish." Those freaks need to shut up and get a life. Educate your son so he's not as succeptable to such gibberish from wackos like PETA.

Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
i put about 5-7 hooks a year in my hands, thigh, knee. lips and other part of the body, 90% to hands. i've put saltwater hooks right though my hands its hurt like hell but!!! i still fished the same days!! yes i think fish feel a certain pain to a certain degree . Tuna and other species have studies on them showing an increase in blood temp. compared to their water they live or swim in, so are they warm blooded and can feel pain? when someone speaks their language we will all know. BUT WE WILL ALWAYS FISH NO MATTER IF THEY FEEL THE PAIN OR NOT!!! have anyone seen cattle and other forms of live stock are slaughtered? i think catching a fish and releasing it it way more humane. (not a peta freak, i love all types of meats!!) keep fishin and keep those hooks sharp!

Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
they recently came out with a new type oh hook that allows a fish after being caught and released to survive better........a lot of fish will swallow the hook and the one they swallowed is called a "j" hook....with that hook it is hard to sometimes get out of their mouth thus causing them to die.....they have now a "circle&quo t; hook which helps them not swallow the hook and allows fishermen to release them alive more often....

Ya sorry to hear that! But it's a bloody shame that you have to worry about the school systems now adays! Alot of self preaching going on to our kids, it should be ABC's and 123's not stop killing the fishy's that should be up to the parent to decide in my book's! GL with this one I know I'll be getting my kids out fishing before they can get BS'ed by anyone!

Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
It may be difficult right now, but you could tell him that "some fish are for looking at and some are for eating". Assure him that the ones he sees at the store are the viewing ones that don't get eaten. However, you may be surprised how he reacts, I love fishing but I am also big on fishkeeping. I don't care much for eating the fish (catch them for someone else), but that's because of the texture and taste not the killing part. Good luck with your son, and dont listen to that ecofriendly bullshit.

Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
Get him used to fishing with catch and release. When he is old enough to understand the "circle of life" hide them in the cooler so he doesn't have to watch them flop if he doesn't want to. You might be surprised how interested he is.

Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
Practice catch and release. Catch your fish and let them go back to their home. If you want to eat fish, that is what a grocery store is for. If you think that the fish in the store have to many contaminants, so do the ones you catch at the local lake

Re:Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
I dont agree with going to the grocery store when I have a backyard of food right near me! You have to read the Ontario consumption guide it reallly hit's eating fish on the DOT! Dont eat Salmon that weigh 50 pounds dont eat walleye that are over a certain length if you have the facts and eat according to that all is well! My grandfather eats walleye like crazy and he is 74 and doesnt have no 3rd eye growing yet....... and that man is a little different then me he would eat a 6-7 pound walleye without a thought but I like to keep my range to 17"-19" ; they taste better and have less toxins! Just my two cents, sure it's nice to release them but like Darryl Cronzy says you pay for a license why not eat a few fish to make up for the cost! I would never pay $10 a pound for walleye or any other fish when you could catch them and that's where those commercial fishys came from so not much difference cept your getting ripped off! Sorry just a very strong subject and this is my opinion!

Re:Does fishing with a hook hurt the fish?
Look in the fishing book that came with your license. In the back it will list the fish and what contaminants they have found in them, as well as how often it is safe to eat them. Then you don't have to explain the process of killing a fish that you should throw back for someone else to catch, or you to catch on another day. And usually the store fish tastes better anyway.
