Cutthroat and Lake Trout closure???
Why the "closure&qu ot; for lake trout and cutthroats during the September challenge season? Neither are spawning, and fishing for them is good during the fall months. Kinda shuts out those of us in the Rocky Mountains.

Re:Cutthroat and Lake Trout closure???
Not that you would have any competition, but they are closed everywhere else because of the spawn or they are in tribs where they are easily snagged or poached!!

Re:Cutthroat and Lake Trout closure???
So are they going to base this thing in the future off of the Great Lakes area of the world? Sounds like to me that they need to look into splitting the tournament into regions during certain times of the year to accomodate other fisherman, especially if they want this thing to gain popularity away from the Great Lakes. Some of the best Trout fishing in the Rockies like Jim said is during the fall and the only species we can go after is a Rainbow? I just don't get that one.

Regions have been in the plan from day one. We need to walk before we run.

Re:Re:Cutthroat and Lake Trout closure???
Richard, you guys are doing a good job, and my question wasn't to create controversy. However, cutthroats are long done spawning. And what about salmon? They spawn in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest all summer. Kings are laying eggs in July. Silvers in August. Yet, they were eligible all summer. Steelhead (rainbows) spawn all year, depending on the run, and the fall runs especially. Any true "steelhead& quot; is coming upstream for one reason, to spawn. Carp spawn in the summer. Cats, I'm not sure about. Is spawning the reason for the closure, or is it something else? I'm just curious.

Again, I have no complaints, nor any reason to, given the success I've had. I was just wondering. I'm confident you'll work things out for the best, and I'll be staying tuned!

First let me say that we welcome your feedback. The tournament structure is based on strong opinions of biologists, anglers..., lively debate and long deliberation. Many factors come in to play to allow the maximum participation from the widest geographical area.

I dont think its based on discrimination against those of the Rocky Mountains....but this has made me think of another question....do you think that we should close all fishing tournaments during the breeding season of the different species of fish to allow thier numbers to grow?

Re:Re:Cutthroat and Lake Trout closure???
Baron, I believe spawning fish can be caught and released with little to no harm, depending on the species. The angler must use good judgement and restraint.

The rules of this tournament do specify that spawning fish are ineligible, but that's a hard one to prove either way unless the fish shows definite "spawned out" features, and many never do. Generally though, I have no problem with general sportfishing of fish that are spawning, in a sporting and legal manner. (However, snaggers should be hung from the tallest tree on main street at sunset!)

Re:Re:Cutthroat and Lake Trout closure???
I didn't want to start any type of contraversy either, and I don't think they are discriminating against the Rockys. I was just a little suprised and frustrated that they closed all Trout and Salmon except for Rainbow/Steelhead. I am also a little suprised that the biologists and experts that assisted in this decision would close it now when water temps are easier on the fish for catch and release than they are when the summer tourney started. Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana all either closed waters or offered different guidelines for fishing this year due to the heat. Oh well, is there any idea of when the Trout and Salmon Categorys will again be part of Bounty so us guys out west can start competing again.

Re:Cutthroat and Lake Trout closure???
I know the feeling Jim, here in Southern California the fishing opportunities are slim (at best). I have to travel a few hours to find a body of water that "might" put me on a bass or two that could possibly put me in the running. Even our best Trout waters are 6 hours driving time from me and while I may catch a lot of trout, the typical size is far below that of your local lake trout (YOUR ONE LUCKY GUY IN MY BOOK AND I NEED TO GET SOME TIME WITH YOU ON YOUR BOAT) since most are planted by the State. But just you wait till I hit the High Sierras for some Golden Trout. Monster Golden Trout are lucky to be over 12 inches. All kidding aside, I think this is exactly what I need to become a better fisherman. It forces me to think outside the box, try something new and challenge myself to find a body of water that will enable me to compete a bit more effectively. If we open up a Tuna or seabass category, I've got a real opportunity. But then again, the rules don't say you can't travel.
