Close But Not A Record
Posted Thu Aug 20, 2009 10:02 am Close But Not A Record
Last month while fishing for Largemouth I caught a White Bass that I thought might break the Ohio state record. I caught it on a 1/2 ounce white spinnerbait fishing in a creek that is connected to the Ohio River. Today I got it certified and it was two ounces light. Looks like the record is safe...for now!

WOW! That a biggy! I think my biggest on White Bass is around 15" not abundant in my waters. Wipers are bigger and more abundant here just cause of the striper breed in them.YUM YUM too!!!

Thanks for the comments! When I first caught it I assumed it was a Wiper (hybrid between White Bass and Striper). I had never caught a White Bass over 16 inches before. I decided to have a fish biologist look at it to make sure. It was verified as a White Bass. Two key features to look at when trying to determine between the two are: If the bars are broken it is a Wiper and a White Bass normally has yellow eyes. That's not to say a Wiper can't have yellow eyes. The fish biologist looked at the size of the scales, fin placement, among others to make his certification. Since I' don't have a degree in fish biology I can't tell you exactly what the differences are. When in doubt, get it checked out.

Fishin is so cool! Learn something new everyday!Hey Kiddo I came across your Taekwondo...I had 2 gals in it when they were young! Toni my youngest daughter took first in sparring for her belt against 86 boys when she was 5 years old in Utah meet(she's 17 now)! Crystlel my second to youngest daughter on that same meet took first for form and overall performance against 15 competitors(there were not many competitors in her belt at that time she was 11 yrs ). I'm a proud MAMA! And all my gals are EVEN TEMPERED SPIT FIRES and fish too!
TAE teaches young ones alot of life skills in mental and physical including self confidence!
I'm sure you can elaborate more on that! Cool thing for young kids especially now days!

Congrats to your girls! Both my sons are in TKD with me. My wife takes cardio kickboxing with us on Tuesdays. It is great family bonding time along with fishing. I have noticed big changes in both of them since they started over a year ago. Like you said Lori, it boosts self confidence while building mental and physical strength. It also teaches them discipline, loyalty, and respect. Some families have game night, my family has Taekwondo night three times a week. I would highly recommend TKD to any family. Wish us luck! We have a big tournament coming up October, 25.

Just a thought here but due to the fact that you had it verified so long after catching it could it have lost some weight due to drying etc??? Even if you freeze it you will lose a bit of the weight on it. Not trying to say you got ripped off but I know this is something to concider.
