Clear water "eyes" HELP!!!
Posted Mon Aug 4, 2008 11:20 pm Clear water "eyes" HELP!!!
Hey been trying a few nights now to catch walleye around Sault ste marie, in the St-Mary's river with no luck. We see them all around following what we throw at em but no bites. Tried a few different techniques including crankbaits, jigs with different dressings, walleye rigs on bottom and bobber suspended, Live baits, soft baits slipsinker rigs etc... No dice. What colours and techniques would work best in a clear river with current durring the day or night.
Thank you.
PS. All catch and release, I'd rather preserve the walleye populations so we can enjoy them for years to come.

I caught a wally in echo bay the other night, in the "spot" we both know about, not to mention a beautiful largemouth man. But anyway if ur up for some eyes ill gladly go anytime, i can catch them.

Hey Al3may! I fish river for eye's and have great luck with drop shotting minnows, nightcrawlers and plastics. I look for fallen debris or bushes and drop all around it. Also when I was out for kitty kats those silly eye's were taking my shrimp tipped with nightcrawlers on a Lindy rig. Jig heads work well on the river I cast up stream and across then slowly reel with a twitch once in awhile back to me. Casting down stream and up does not work. I use a fairly heavy jighead and put a multi colored black, flurescent orange and green tail on it but nightcrawlers work the best. Good luck!

thanks guys, it's all helping a got a few small ones around sudbury area the other daynothing to brag about but it's a start. I really just simplified my approach took apart these fancy spinners and kept em simple double hook, 4-5 beads one blade, contrasting colours. Worm tiped. BUT what to do when they switch off to flys on the top water and i dont have a fly fishing rig? Any tips cause i see em jumping all around just swallowing down any fly on water. Also what hatches when? Arey they eating dragon flies right now?

I don't know what for sure is hatching in your area but in Utah and Idaho there's been a HUGE caddis fly hatch and the fish are going crazy! If the fish are taking any fly on the water you can try putting a small one on your regular pole With no weight and floatant and let it drift. I've seen it done a couple of times with some success.

Great idea! I've used that technique with trout on river using rock rollers and flies. It should work with eyes!

try a small float 6-8 ft above fly. Float allows you to cast and strike indicator. Tight lines!

Clear water and they are followin? Try down sizing your baits and slow the presentation a little bit. You may need to go with a low visibility line, also.

haha i am THE master at fly fishing, you know not to toot my own horn but uh... lol. ANYWAY if your not sure whats hatching it will most likely be caddis or mayfly. if you can get into a fly shop i would buy several size 14 Emergers, and some size 14 caddis or 16 mayfly. if all else fails buy dose size 12 Parachute Adams. they work anywhere :) remember with flys bigger is not always better-stick with smaller gear and work your way up until you find the sweet spot. good luck!!
