Which worms are better? Is fake bait better or is live bait better?

Re:best bait for catfish?
The best time to catch catfish is between 12 midnight and 6am in the morning, the best bait i have found for night fishing is shrimp. you could use chicken livers but they are messy and hard to stay on the hook.

Hope this helps!

Re: Re:best bait for catfish?
For those that like to use liver sprinkle a little garlic on it and let it stay out for a couple of days it will toughen up and stay on the hook better.

Hey Swan! Live is better for kitty kats, they like the smell! I also dip my worm in garlic oil before casting. I have caught some of the biggest kittys in the middle of a spring time afternoon. I am starting to catch them around 7:00pm right now instead of midnight.

Mullet Gut! Guaranteed to strike everytime anytime anywhere.
You can buy it at your local seafood place. Just call them up and tell them to save the mullet gut for, you. Catfish go grazy for it.

Re:best bait for catfish?
I have two favorites. First and foremost, chicken liver or anything with a lot of chicken blood in it. Chicken liver can be difficult to keep on the hook, so I borrow a tip from my grandfather. If you know anybody that processes their own chickens, used the chicken entrails. Works great, almost as good as the livers. Number two, and a close second at that, is cutbait. Use about a 1 inch chunk of whatever little fish you catch (perch, bullhead, bluegill, etc.). If it has skin on it, it stays on hook forever, and catfish love it. You can use any fish for bait legally as long as it is a fish that is legal to keep

Re: best bait for catfish?
If you're fishing for small channels, any bait with a strong odor will work well. Ripe shrimp is fine. But if you want to catch big channels or flatheads you need to use live baitfish. Bluegill work best . Large channels and flatties are strictly predators and won't eat garbage. Happy fishing.

My main catfish bait, since i was a child, has been hotdog. I use about a 1-2" piece. I never have a night without catching a few cats with dogs. You'll find it takes a certain grace in your cast to keep the dog from flying off the hook however. And cut bait is always an excellent choice!

To me fishing aint about the fish, it's about the fishing!

Re: best bait for catfish?
MisterMystery is right, live bait is the hands down best way to catch a big cat. In fact, its the only way to catch a big flathead or "tabby" as we call them in the southeast. Other species aren't as picky. In the brackish water of the Mobile-Tensaw delta we catch big blues and tabbies with whole blue crabs in their bellies.
Also, contrary to popular belief, the best time to find the big ones is in the heat of the day. Anywhere you can find a deep hole in the river (usually in a sharp bend), there will be several big and in some cases REALLY BIG cats.

I will save the hot dogs for the BBQ! Cut shad is the way to go. Big live minnows kill'em. Big baits will do the trick.

Re: best bait for catfish?
Cut shad, liver with garlic, danny kings stink bait with a treble hook, when i fish for catfish I take several baits because one day they may bite on one thing the next day they may not. throw different baits in and see what they hit on then go with that particular bait.

Re: best bait for catfish?
Aaah!!! It's that time again. Catfish season.

First, you have to ask yourself do you want to catch monster size cats or just catch the consistent smaller versions. One of this decision will determine your catfishing trip. Personally, I like going for the monster cats. In this scenario, I use a 15 - 40 800M with a 30T Saltist w/ 25lb test spooled. I use from a size 6/0 to and 8/0 octupus hook. I probably go to about 20lbs of bait per night. I either use mackarel or bonita chunks. When I say chunks, I mean 8 oz minimum. Flyline is the only way to go and I usually fish with the reel on freespool, so there will be no resistance when the fish takes the bait. You will know if you have a monster on, because your reel would hum and the line would just keep on running. I usually give it the ten second count and then put my reel into strike. Number one mistake in using octopus hooks is to set the hook and pull on the rod. The best way is after your ten seond count is let the fish hook himself, by simply keeping your rod tip up and letting the fish do all the resistance. As for location, move if you do not get a bite within 30 minutes to an hour. Look for underwater structures, such as sunken trees near points, because they usually hold fish around that area. This is why using a heavy line helps because 90% of the time they will wrap you into structure. Usually, once you hit a hot spot, there will be the pesky ones taking your bait and f'ing up your freespooled reel. The best way to find out if these cats are worth it to stay is to throw a spinning outfit with 15lbs test with a thumbsized mack or bonita on a size 2 hook. If you hook up on this outfit and bring in a small cat most likely 99% of them are around that size, yet do not get me wrong there is always that 1% monster lurking by to get some grub. If you like to use night crawlers, try pumping them up on a short leader. Mealworms and marshmallows is also a good combo. PM me if you need anymore info.

Thanks,
Hustlur
