Barbless Hooks?
Posted Mon Sep 17, 2007 12:22 pm Barbless Hooks?
I fish for fun and release everything I catch. Has anyone here used barbless hooks, and if so, what did you think of them? Did you lose more fish than usual, or none at all? Can anyone tell me where I can find them, aside from paying too much at a bait shop?

I have had to use barbless hooks from time to time for different waters. I wouldn't say that you loose a lot more fish, but you do loose more than maybe normal. As far as going cheaper, I would just use the hooks that you would normally use and snip off the barb or file it down.

If you keep your line tight, you'll catch MORE! Barbless hooks are easier to set into a fish's mouth, and less likely to tear out or create a large hole. Just keep your line smooth and tight when you have the fish hooked. Easy in, easy out. And don't buy them special, just bend down the barb with hemostats or pliers depending on the hook size. Flatten the barb on any hook.

Take a regular hook and pinch down the barb with a pair of pliers, or file it off with a diamond file. Works just fine, and much cheaper

I've used them, and yes, you lose more fish. You can make "barbless&q uot; hooks yourself by either crimping the barb closed or by snipping it off w/ a pair of clippers.

You can get barbed hooks and cut the barbs off yourself, with a pair of diagonal cutters (dikes).

I've used Barbless hooks before. I'm not as big a fan of them as I am barbed hooks. I guess you can call me cruel. I understand the humaneness of them with being easier to pull out but you don't see to many people using barbless hooks these days. Never had a big difference in losing fish. Most larger sporting good stores have barbless hooks. Dicks, Sports Authority.

Smash down the barb on some of the hooks you've got already. The actual barbless hooks sometimes have a bump where the barb would be,but I've never used em.I've fished barbless hooks before, and unless the stream or lake you're fishing requires them, they're garbage. You'll lose a lot more fish with the damn things.

i've used, and i actually like it, my wife doesn't eat fish so we get to catch and release most of the time... you don't have to loose more fish, it all depends on if you know what you're doing or not. if you don't even know when the fish is biting it'll be hard to keep it on.

When matchfishing, barbless hooks can really make a positive difference - no bard to interfere with penetration, quicker unhooking and far fewer incidental mortalities for deep hooked fish. A good compromise for those who don't want to go fully barbless is choosing hooks with a micro-barb.

In Manitoba it is required to fish with barbless hooks, I havn't used the barbs but I don't have a problem with it - I just keep my hooks crazy sharp and don't lose a lot of fish.

I mash the barbs on mine when fishing for speckled trout in salt water. Make it easier to use the dehooker so you dont have to touch them.

I have fished barbless for 10 years now and I can tell you it is better for the fish and the fisherman, there is nor comparison, barbless is the way to go, especially for Northerns and Musky. I think if you fish barbed hooks for fear of loosing fish you may be fishing for the wrong reasons.

Barbless is the way to go! Makes NO difference on your catch if your payin attention. I think most of you barbless guys hit it right nose on.... so I'm not going to regurgitate....but will tell you an experience I went through 2 summers ago. A teenaged boy fishin down from me about 100yrds or so, was snappin his cast to hard and fast...He hooked his back.... He was screaming..I dropped my rod and hauled @$$ over to him. The hook was barbed and the whole shaft/shank of the hook was under his skin with the loop/eye of the hook stuck at the entry and the #2 size end of hook poking out at exit!!! HE HOOKED HIMSELF AND GOOD!! There was NO pullin that barbed hook out from the way it entered because of the barbs...it would of tore that poor kid up even more. I ran back to my tackle box (which seemed like a mile run)
and grabbed my pliers... and back to him. I snipped the loop of the hook and pulled it right on through by the hook point while that poor little guy screamed in pain the whole time and I'm shakin to beat hell the whole time to get it out!!! I'm a barbless MA!!!
That was not a smiley!!

Hannibal used the word "humaneness" to describe the barbless hook earlier in this thread and that is one word I can not stand. Talk about an oxymoron! The word "humane" is used to describe a kinder, gentler way of doing things yet the root of the word is human. There is no more violent species on the planet. When is the last time you heard about a dog walking into a mall and shooting people? Anyone ever heard of a horse putting on a vest full of explosives and walking into a crowd and blowing itself up? How about a tuna loading itself with C4 and running into a US war ship? The word "humane" is a joke. Animals kill and injure only in self defense and for food. Humans physically, verbally, and mentally abuse others of their own species as well as other for absolutely no reason yet we use the word humane to describe kindness. Does anyone else see a problem with this? Maybe a more correct word would be "animane". Animals don't go around preforming acts of senseless violence.
Don't get me wrong, I am no tree hugger or peacenik, I was a sniper in the 2nd Ranger Batt, fought in Panama and Desert Storm and I was very good at my job. I was a member of a Special Op unit and I never missed a target. If I was not crippled from my previous combat experience, I would have re-upped and gone back into the fight after 9/11. Please don't think I am one of those peace sign carrying wackos, I just wanted to point out the humor or lack of humor involved in the word "humane".
