Re: Alligator Gar
I normally dont help out yankee fans but since your a fisherman I will make an exception haha First off metal leaders are a MUST they are BIG creatures with some sharp teeth. They put pike to shame. Depending on how big you heard this thing was i would say use like 20-40lb test I would def use a good size treble hook maybe like 5/0 or 6/0 considering they have tough skin to skink into so make sure they are nice and sharp. The best way to catch them is live or even cut up bait. Any type of fish or meat. Best thing to do is to just throw the bait out there and let it free float near a channel or deep spot. They tend to hunt closer to the top of the water waiting for anything to come along. Do a slow retrieve and once the gar hits give some slack and open the bail, let him run just a little to make sure he has it then close your bail quick and set the hook..HARD You can normally see them if they are there. I've fished for them down in florida good fight and sharp teeth!
Good Luck man! Go Sox! (They will come around!)

Re: Alligator Gar
why would you want to bowfish? its such a waste of a perfectly healthy fish! Wheres the sport in that? Kill the fish and reel it in? haha i could see if you had to eat but still there no game to it.

Re: Alligator Gar
from the pictures i have seen online you better get yourself some 300-400 pound line and a rope to anchor yourself to something. some of them weigh in at 300 pounds or more. they also say that they're scales are so thick and tough that the natives use them for arrow and spear heads. the bigger ones are really an alligator without legs. the only reason they are still around is because they can breath both air and water. good luck and watch your fingers.
