The rigors of Kayak fishing

This morning I set out to better my catch in the largemouth North category. On Monday earlier this week I lost a 5 pounder down in a tree at one of my lunker fishing spots so I set out to have another go at him. First thing this morning the wind was perfect, about 5 mph and the sky was really overcast, a good combination for active lunkers. I eased my fishing kayak into position about 20-25 yards away from a half submerged tree and anchored. Like I said I was here to better my catch so I was using big bass bait, a zoom 10.5" black worm texas rigged with a 1/8oz weight. On my first cast my line jumped and I reared back and set the hook into a fish. In my kayak my net stands up right behind my head, when I reared back and started cranking, my crank and fingers wound up into the net. My reel and my hand were stuck behind my head with a bass on the other end of the line. I pulled my hand free from the net and the line was still moving. I started bringing in the fish one armlength after another. Let me tell you, bass feel much bigger when your bringing them in on a hand line with 10 pound mono. I ended up landing the fish and the photo is in my albums labeled 7-4-09 mishap. Notice the fishing pole sideways behind my head in the net. I never did hook the 5 pounder again or any other big bass, only small ones. Fishing from a kayak definately has its advantages and disadvantages. Its unbelievable how small of a bass will eat a 10.5" worm. I was fairly confident earlier in the week with my catches, but I got bumped out of 5th last night in largemouth and smallmouth. The smallmouth was the biggest I have ever landed, but I normally dont fish for them nearly as much as largemouth. What I like about bounty fishing is it gives me a reason to target other species harder that I normally wouldent pursue that hard. I fished pretty hard this week and am happy with my catches. Fishing from a kayak definately has its advantages and disadvantages. Click for full image

gotta love the lack of room in a kayak for fishing, but got to love how you can get where boats can't. Also a kayak fisherman
