A lot of athletes, sports fanatics, and especially fisherman are superstitious. Superstition is defined by Mr. Webster as a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation, an irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural, nature, or God.As unbelievable as some of the superstitions can be, I find myself wanting to learn more about them and the reasoning behind them. Here are just a few of the many fisherman or fisherwomen superstitions. Bad luck... Having a banana on board Catching a fish on your first cast of the day Removing your landing net from storage before the first fish If a dragon fly lands on the cork Good Luck... Spitting on your bait (especially if chewing Anise) A hat, shirt, undergarment, bait, etc. If fish in a tank are at the top Go fishing after a hard rain Some of these may be myths while others have true merit. Psychologists would say that when we believe in these things, they acÂtually have a placebo effect, fueling positive or negative thinking. This could explain why such things influence a day on the lake. (8 comments)
