I got out this morning with a good friend of mine that I don't get to fish with very often anymore. He's married with kids and building a new house, so his time is limited. We got on the water around six and started going to the usual spots but didn't have much luck, a small one here and there, but nothing great. We fished until about nine with no real action, until we saw what the problem was. The fish were sitting in no more than two feet of water feeding on these flies that I haven't seen before. We had been fishing on deeper rock structure, 10-12 feet, and we did try spinner baits in the shallows and nothing seemed to work. Until my buddy decided he was going to pull out old trusty, and when say old trusty I mean OLD. He had a couple size 6 Hula poppers that looked like that they had been laying on the bottom of Noahs ark. He puts one of these on a little St. Croix ultralight and throws it out there. He didn't pop that thing twice and he had one on. I was laughing so hard just because it was a typical move for him. He could catch the biggest muskie in the lake with the rustiest dardevle in the land. I chalked it up to luck at that point until he caught another one. Now I'm not laughing anymore. I grabbed the other Hula that he had and put it on my little St. Croix ultralight, and tossed it out, bam! fish on, not very big but a fish. We sat on this little rock reef for almost two hours just rippin' these smallies on Hulas. It was a blast! I think the biggest one we had was about 16 inches but man we caught a ton of em. It was a trip that I will remember forever just because it was just us two hombres catchin' fish and havin' blast tossin a lure that father time wouldn't even use. We probably had over 75 fish and they all went back, and none of them looked worse for the wear. I have some pics, so I'll post them when I get a chance. See ya : )
