Wow what an exciting week! I heard about some big redfish roaming around my area on Monday right after I signed up for the Bounty Fishing Tournament the weekend before. By Monday afternoon I packed up my rods in my pickup and picked up my friend Jake and told him we were going on an adventure to an area neither of us had fished before. Jake's a crazed fisherman like me so the thought of losing a nights sleep in search of Monster Redfish was quite appealing to him. We arrived at our spot not knowing what to expect. I had a sprained ankle and had no idea that when we reached our spot there would be a quarter mile walk with all our gear once we parked the car. I sucked it up and we braved swarms of mosquitoes and gnats with no repellant in sight. We reached the fishing spot and immediately got to work rigging, baiting, and throwing our first casts. Within 15 minutes I was hooked up and after a short battle I had a 30" red coming into the landing net. It certainly wasnt a monster, but it was big enough to give me a little comfort zone in the tournament. 20 minutes later I got another bite and a short fought battle resulted in another nice fish of 29". A third bite resulted in another 28" fish that I quickly released unharmed. Jake was getting aggravated because he couldnt buy a bite, but i reassured him that his time would come. Speaking of time, we almost called it quits because it would be 3 1/2 hours before our next bite! Around 2am Jakes rod finally goes off and he finally puts the hook into the corner of the jaw on a nice fish. As the fish enters our spotlight we can see that it is a monster. It barely fit in the net and taped out at 42"! His biggest before that one was 25". This spot was on fire and i was very eager to get a monster like Jakes before they stopped biting. I switched baits to the one Jake was using and launched mine out as far as i could. Jake did the same and shortly after he was hooked up again....another monster taping out at 41"! We released the big female and i immediately heard my clicker screaming and ran to the rod and set the hook. I could tell it was pig as it screamed 17lb mono off my spool. I took control of the battle and made short work of her after the initial run. Jake got her with a perfect net shot and we put her to the measuring tape....a solid 40" fish! By then it was 3am and I knew that I had an awesome fish for the tournament so we called it quits even though they were biting so well. We were both exhausted and excited at the same time. I Made it home just in time to see the sunlight peak through the morning clouds and laid my head down to sleep the day away and dream of bigger Reds to come!
