If you have ever landed a nice fish, but didn't have a proper scale with you, then here is a method that usually rings true. Measure the length and the girth of the fish in inches. Then apply those measurements to this formula: Length x Girth(squared) รท 800. For instance, a fish measuring 35'' in length with an 18'' girth would weigh about 14lb.

If I catch a fish that was 35" in length and 18" in girth, my smile would weigh about 14 lbs :D However, I mainly fish for bass these days, and you have to admit that'd be quite a bass!

I have used the first method and have been within 97% accurate after weighting the fish right after using this method.

more accurate is the length x length x girth divided by 3500.
