Lonnie (CA)'s Profile > Stories > Carp Competition – Update #1
As a follow-up to my earlier post – here’s an update on preparation for the CARP Tournament Series (www.carptournamentseries.com) event taking place in Baldswinville, New York this May 13-16.This event is billed as the Iron-Man event of carp fishing, where two man teams fish for 50 straight hours. This will be the third year for the event at Baldswinville. I’ve been preparing for the past few months, but it’s great to finally have some open water so I can start hooking into some fish. Fishing has be pretty sporadic so far, with weather is warm and balmy one day and frigid the next. The ‘Big Bite’ is still yet to happen. My strategy in preparing for the event has been to research every piece of information possible on the internet and learning from other anglers; also experimenting with a wide variety of rigging and baits to see if there is room to improve on those well established patterns I typically rely on. A big part of preparation is simply to becoming familiar with some of the new gear I’ve acquired for the event and to get back into the swing of things after a long winter of icefishing. In order to stand a chance in this type of event you need to be familiar with using a variety of hard-core carp techniques including the use of marker floats, spods and fishing at ranges of up to 100 yds. Common presentations involve straight ledgering and using method feeders. Your chumming strategy is also fundamental to your success. We had one fantastic day recently were a group of us managed 3 fish over 30 lbs. (photos attached) Stay tuned, if you’re interested in seeing how this event unfolds, and I’ll have plenty more big fish photos to share before then I’m sure.
