Why BountyFishing.com is the "The Fish’s Fishing Tournament" tm.

Here is an interesting article that was posted on the website Science Daily. Any science experiment that lasts 20 years is an impressive feat, especially one directly looking at the impact of angling on fish.

Born To Be Caught: Largemouth Bass Vulnerability To Being Caught By Anglers Is A Heritable Trait

Please focus your attention on the following statement stemming from this scientific study:

"Philipp recommended that if fishing tournaments were held during the spawning season, then regulations should require that there be immediate catch-and-release, eliminating the use of tournament weigh-ins."

Good article, It all sounds logical to me. In NY bass season is closed from Late winter through the 3rd sat in June. There is a catch and release season from may through june, and I believe lake erie has a trophy smallmouth season that starts in may where you may keep 1 fish of 20 inches or greater. For the most part, the spawn is over by mid june, but in some of the bigger lakes (Seneca in particular in my area) spawning occurs into mid July. I agree that Bass should not be fished for on Beds.

I agree totally ...with Phillip...Bass should just plain close at this time of year..great study and funny because we have had implimented rules and regs in Ontario that protect bass for exactly the reasons the study ...if only people could understand....

If you take a look at the range and diverse habitat that the Largemouth inhabit, focusing on this statement "Philipp recommended that if fishing tournaments were held during the spawning season, then regulations should require that there be immediate catch-and-release, eliminating the use of tournament weigh-ins." become a ludicrous endeavor. We are not talking about a fragile species. I understand the need to push the bountyfishing agenda, but highlighting just a specific sentence in a scientific study ranks right up there with the tactics that "animal activists" use to confuse and muddy the water to push their moral standing on everyone else. I really thought this was a cool site and idea, but if this kind of crap is going to be pushed I'll definitely rethink my view.
