Most Memorable Fish
Just last Sat night we boated a mighty musky. After eating the bait, she ran hard toward the front trolling motor...hard enough to drop me to one knee (maybe both). Luckily, my guide raised the motor just as she streaked by, pulling hard. For just a split second I thought I had a hold on her. Still on my knees, she ran hard back under the boat, pulling my left hand off the rod, hyper extending my right arm behind me, and wrenched the rod against the bottom of the boat as she pulled relentlessly toward the big motorâ&brvb ar;all so fast that, at this point, my shoulders are still square off the bow. Bob was able to tilt the big motor up, but it almost didn't matter given that I only had a partial right hand grip left on the rod as the fish used the bottom of the boat to leverage against me, nearly pulling the rod handle from hand. I held on. I pivoted toward her just as she swam from under the boat and jumped (Larry, who is no stranger to big fish says, âshe is a giant.â), and just like that, pulled so hard back under the bow that she drove my hands down on the gunwale, pressing the rod just in front of the reel against the boat. The rod exploded. Graphite shrapnel in the air, a butt end section with reel still intact, and two pieces of broken rod and a leader were now between me and the fish. I turned the handle upside down and used the bait casting reel like a spinning reel, which meant I had to reel backwards, so that the line would only contact the only eye left on the rod and not the shattered end. She was hooked well, in the corner of her mouth, and finally started to give up the fight. A few minutes later, Bob had her securely on the boga, and removed the hooks. In the boat for a quick measurement, and a handful of pics, and she was back in the water. Bob said, âJust hang on to her for a second and enjoy the momentâ. And for a few seconds, it was just me and my Muskie, until she swam awayâ&brvba r; all forty pounds of her. This fish is most memorable for so many reasons. Being in the right spot at the right time like my guide does better than any muskie fisherman ever has, along with experiencing this along my two mates, Bob and Larry, whose passion for giant muskies has put them in this situation countless times before. With the sky darkening and the end of a great trip getting too near, we moved to one more spot. A few casts later, Bob tied into another giant, every bit as heavy and determined. Game on!

Dream Fishing Trip
anywhere on the water with my lovely bride who's enthusiasm for fishing naturally puts enough added action on the bait that she always catches fish.
