Float Fishing With Rapala’s

Fishing Rapala’s For Big Rainbows

My family and I decided to fish this Sunday that just passed. We floated the Bow River in search of Browns and Rainbows that occupy this river. It has taken me until today to write this post so sorry for the delay. I brought the movie camera along and my girlfriend was kind enough to be my camera woman for the day. I am planning a video series on fishing rivers with various types of fishing tackle being featured. A few weeks back was the practice run for this series of videos.

I am hoping to get the first two videos of the series filmed before the snow flies here in Alberta. As we locals know the time is ticking. The video above is me chucking a Brown Trout Rapala into the banks of the Bow River. The fish were going nuts for this proven lure from Rapala. The lure is a countdown CD-9 and has a very tight wobble which looks very life like to sport fish!

Please watch the video and share it with your friends!!!! Leave some feedback on the Blog as to what you would like to see featured, lures, spinners etc.

Click “Watch In High Quality” while on YouTube for a better viewing experience.

Thank you.

  1. I love fishing Rapalas. Awesome lure for bassin…and troutin too!

  2. Yes for sure, I never leave home without a good selection of Rapala’s in my back pack. I use them often when I float rivers here.

  3. GREAT FISHING…

    Not monsters but respectable rainbows.

Cigarette butts thrown in the river and SHHHHHHHHH/ignore to the kid not as impressive…

I smoke and put my butts in my pocket and treat children like humans…

  4. Thanks for the comment Mark? First off the but I threw in the river I picked up and put in the boat and discarded it in the trash can. Secondly I treat my baby boy like gold, sometimes he likes to talk a little too much so I asked him to be quiet while I shot this video so the viewing audience could hear what I was passing on. I don’t know everything but I do know a couple of things!!! I know how to treat people with respect (When they deserve respect) and I know how to put my garbage in the trash can !!!

    Happy fishing to ya’

  5. This is such a cool site! And the video is awesome! I have fished with family along the White River in Arkansas for the past few Octobers, using Rapala CD-7s mostly. The trout seem to love them. I have also caught some small mouths on these. I consider myself a fishing novice and was wondering what type of line you suggest for catching the big browns and rainbows. How do you rig your Rapalas? Also, what type of rod and reel is used in the video or do you prefer? Thanks for the response!

  6. I love the site too Clay. Thanks for the comment on the video also. My preference of line is Berkley XT 8Lb test for those big big Browns and Rainbows. It’s abrasion resistant and it gives me instant hook sets. On my Rapala’s I ALWAYS swap out the factory hooks and replace them with Eagle Claw treble hooks, we are allowed to fish trebles here in Alberta, Canada. If the Rapala does not come with a split ring attached to the bill, I attach one and tie on using an improved clinch knot.

Everyone has their own opinion on which rods and reels are the best, I personally use a Berkley Precision Tech rod with a Pflueger Supreme spinning reel which is what I am using in the video. It works awesome for me.

    Thanks Clay,

    ~Mike.

  7. Great video, good luck with your video series I hope to see it out there one day. I have just purchaseda few cd-7’s and cant wait to get out here in colorado.

  8. Thanks David, they sure do work awesome for trout and most other game fish. Colorado sure has some awesome fishing I hear, I would love to journey down and fish your beautiful country. One day hopefully soon.

  9. Great site and video Mike! Makes me wanna go out to the bow to do some fishing now. What type of lures do you use? I’ll have to google what CD-7s are and looks like. Do you use any spoons for them trouts on the river? If so, which types? The popular 5 of diamonds?
    Thanks Mike!

  10. Hey Andy, thanks for the comment. I use all sorts of spinners and I also use spoons. The spoons I prefer to use are Williams Wobblers, Kastmasters, and yes once and awhile I will throw out the old Len Thompson.

I also like Blue Fox, Panther Martin, Rapala, Storm, and Berkley.

Thanks for the comment and hope to see you again here soon. You can also check out my Blog at http://www.bowriverblog.com for more info on what is going on here in Calgary on the Bow River.

  11. Thanks very much for the tips Mike! In between my msg and your reply I went out to Bass Pro in Balzac to pick up a CD-7 and a couple of other accessories.

Going out to the bow tomorrow after work. I’ll bring the spoons and other tackles along as you suggested and hopefully I’ll be able to catch something before the sun sets…starting to set a little too early now :(

Found another blog of yours from last year about the prime locations on the bow within Calgary that you suggested to go. I’ll try those. Have you tried fishing @ Bowness and Edworthy Parks? Bowness Bridge in the NW? and Crowchild bridge also in the NW? and Prince’s Island Park? If so, what do you think of those areas?

  12. Awesome Andy, I love the new Bass Pro Shop in Balzac. That cold white stuff is just around the corner so I am trying to make the most of what is left of the warmer weather.

If I was to pick one of the three locations you listed here I would fish at the Crowchild Tr bridge. I have heard this spot holds massive fish. I have only fished there once and never got too familiar with the location. I would suggest fishing here and get back to me as to how you fair.

    Thanks,

    ~Mike.

  13. I used to fish this river back in the day, wow what a trip.

  14. Thanks, it still is as good as it used to be but more crowded at times. I get up early or fish late at night to try and avoid the crowds.

    Thanks for the comment,

    ~Mike.
