Dissing the Deep: Freaky Fish

It’s a bit unfair to insult these creatures, especially since, for all we know, we caught the ugliest ones of the species. As fish get more freaky, they tend to get more rare, so it’s hard to tell. Imagine if aliens landed for a quick science and data gathering expedition, and came across Carrot Top, took some photos, went back to their home planet, and said “Hey little aliens, this is what ‘humans’ look like”. And they’d be all like “gross!” That caveat now out in the open, it’s time to tear these freaks a new one.

Blob Freaks
They’re lucky they can float around underwater. On land, these fat boys wouldn’t be able to get off the couch.

I vant, to bite, your eyes. A pile of spikes with a creature attached.

Scaly Dragonfish

Fugly
Gah. The kind of fish we’d wipe out if we didn’t always throw them back after we caught them and saw their ugly faces.

Coffinfish
a60_coffinfish.jpg
“Did you just fart?” “Sorry, I had souvlaki for lunch.”

Bat Fish

“Honey I swear I’m not cheating on you! The lipstick is from the fish. It was the fish I tells ya!”

Scorpion Fish

When hiding from its prey, the Vomit fish takes on the shape of last night’s dinner. Looks like it exploded.

Leopard Toadfish

Unidentified Anglerfish

An ACTUAL SEA DEMON.

LOOK AT ME
I guess if you want to see anything in the deep, you’ve got to turn yourself into a walking (swimming?) light show. For bottom-dwellers, they sure seem to need attention.

Parrotfish

There’s a reason why blue and orange are no one’s team colors.

Scrawled Filefish

Rockfish

Looks like a cross between a cute little Ewok and a SPIRIT OF THE DAMNED.

Straight Up Aliens
Aliens land, dive underwater, see these things, and say “what’s up man, how you been?” No way these things are from this planet.

Almost Normal…. But No.
These fish aren’t as insane looking as the previous ones, and in fact look mostly like regular fish, with some appendage gone a bit haywire.

Ocean Sunfish
livescience-ig54_ocean_sunfish_02.jpg
Tastes great with blueberries, butter and maple syrup.

Smooth Trunk Fish

“When hiding from it’s prey” means “When hiding from it is prey.”

You might want to rethink your “correction”

  6. GrammarCop:
Get off the Internet with your pointless spam!

“Your” a spammer, that’s worse than bad grammar. @$$

  7. The fish photos are quite exotic! Although I’m not a big fan of the color commentary.

  8. :There’s a reason why blue and orange are no one’s team colors.:

Gaaaaa! Blasphemy! How you can live with this terrible ignorance of localized cultural minutiae for every member of your potentially worldwide audience is beyond my ability to comprehend!

Clearly you don’t follow American College Football ( or Basketball ) or live in the deep south.

In terms of college athletics as a religion, SEC athletics is probably best compared to Charismatic Revival Churches, and UF ( University of Florida ) is more rabid than most. Not QUITE a cult, but only because people are afraid of the backlash :o)

Seriously, though. If you have a pet bulldog, I’d suggest getting him a bodyguard, at least until this post blows over. I doubt we’d hurt him, but we still might paint him Orange and Blue!

    Go Gators!!

    Gator Bait!!

    Shane

I find it amazing how you managed to make a point about poor grammar in a run-on sentence. Put your money where your mouth is.

  20. Did some of the commentary make anyone else think that some form of jock wrote it?? “Dude, dude…this fish looks like a penis!! Dude!!”

    Seriously.

  25. This fish is quite an inspiration for making art.
I think the rock-fish would make a perfect movie monster.

  26. WOW.

    GREAT PICS!

  27. GrammarCop: I feel you. And people, READ his/her comment (it’s CORRECT, because it’s WRONG, derf)!

Anyway, great pics; a lot of these fish are seen in action–take a look at BBC’s Deep Blue.

By the way… GO METS!!! (blue and orange team)

  28. As I looked at these great pics I thought to myself, imagine if you’re out fishing and you actually brought one of these fish up to the boat. Imagine how you would feel, react, etc. Especially if you had someone in the boat that didn’t know much about fish.

  29. They are so interesting.
